new to expression have a question about screen adjustment

I've found the property in my background style that allows my background to adjust to the size of my browser window. If I set (x) background-postion to centre and (y) background-position to centre, then the background will re-size according to my browser window.

This is great, however all the layers that I have placed on my page don't adjust with the window size. All my layers scatter when I re-size my window.

What property must be set so that my layers stay in position.

help!!!

Downloadable tutorials in the future?

Having finished the first group of videos to get into using Expression Web I've got to say I am enjoying using EW and following along to the videos, it's my prefered style of learning, but theres one small problem for me. At the end of the month I'm moving to a new house and it'll take some time before I can have regular access to the internet again so while I can keep designing and such I won't be able to search forums for any help or watch the videos online.
I did a search of the forums and I couldn't find anything that seemed like this had been discussed before so I thought maybe I'd bring it up. There are downloads (for the introduction videos at least) for Zune and iPod, great if you have those, but unfortunatly I don't and I'm doubtful they will work on a computer. So is there any chance there will be downloads available that are laptop/PC friendly in the future? Of course I'm not saying they should be uploaded by tomorrow but it strikes me as strange to have only Zune and iPod downloads available, if Camtasia is recording in such a way that you can only view the videos with these two devices or online I'm sure there are other ways you can record, CamStudio as one example off the top of my head.

Anyway just thought I'd throw it out there.

Audio Problems with Tutorials

Greetings,

As I look and listen to your video tutorials, the audio begins to lag behind big time. It begins to sound like tortured chipmunks. This is even after I've completely downloaded the tutorial before I run it so I'm not waiting for my buffer to catch up. Now I have just learned, and am not 100% certain why, that the current Flash player is creating this problem. Is this correct?

What is creating this very disturbing audio playback problem with your tutorials? And if you know and are aware of the problem, what are you doing to fix it?

I'm asking these questions because I would like to purchase one of the LearnVisualStudio.Net packages your sister site has for sale. However, this audio problem is so bad that I don't want to spend my money on the product if the answer is for me to uninstall the most current Flash program only to re-install a Flash program that is two generations old. Answers such as that don't work for me.

Your tutorials are really very good. And I'm certain that the quality of the original recording is excellent. But before I purchase a 2-year package, I'd like to know what steps you are taking to correct this problem. Please inform me and the others who are experiencing this problem.

Pause the videos

I've got a simple, probably born of ignorance, question: How do I pause the videos once they are running my browser? From what I've seen, these videos (thanks to creator!) are by far the best, most approachable, way to learn Expressions (especially for an old Frontpage user), but I need to pause them occasionally to digest the info. and work on the other screen of Expressions that I have open.

Strange problem

[New Problem]
I've pushed myself forward since yestarday and got myself to the end of the Expression Web introduction tutorial and managed to get my site looking like it should... in IE7. Firefox insists on causing me much pain and suffering however. So in IE it looks fine, [URL=http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/8381/siteieth4.jpg]IE Screen[/URL], but firefox is having some real issues with the footer, [URL=http://img355.imageshack.us/img355/8238/siteff3dd9.jpg]FF 3 screen[/URL].

[New Solution]
Having sat and read through the code, gave myself an annoying headache I managed to find the cause of the problem and more importantly solve it, sort of.
The problem was that I hadn't cleared both on the footer div so it was moving up over the top of my left and right columns. So having cleared both on the footer it jumps down to the bottom in firefox where it's meant to be [b]and[/b] it works fine in IE7 as well. All I've got to do now is get my footer style working again (I tore out the code and started new on the footer to find the problem :P)

A big thanks for making the video tutorials, after swapping back to an older Flash version they work fine and help out a lot :)

WHen I play the tutorial on my laptop, I get a lot of choppy interference with audio and the audio runs about four or five seconds faster than the video, so it is never describing the actions I'm actually seeing. It's describing actions I will soon see. It makes learning more of a challenge.

Any ideas?

Problem with Screen Shots

I am including several screen shots in my website. I used the auto thumbnail feature when I inserted them into the page. But when I preview the site and click to drill down to the larger image the text turns out all fuzzy and is barely legible. Where am I missing it?

Hi,

I am currently working through the second video and attempting to display the first picture right above the footer of the core website. I am working with three different browsers: IE7, Firefox3, and Opera 9.5. The picture looks correct for the latter two browsers but for IE7, the bottom of the image is being cut off by the footer. I followed all of the instructions and can't seem to figure it out. Thanks in advance for any help given. By the way here's the code...

I am following the Learn Expression videos and currently I am looking at the second one dealing with CSS and the author uses images for background. I am also working with my own version of Expression Web 2 but I can't find the images that he is using in the lesson. Are there images that I can download somewhere on the site? For those who have went through the videos, would anyone have an answer for me?

Video lags Audio

Thanks for the instructional videos. They are very helpful!

When I play the videos the audio and video start out in sync but as they play I hear quick little audio anomalies which sometimes are very high pitched and extremely fast and sometimes very low pitched and extremely slow. In short order the audio is playing ahead of the video, sometimes up to 45 sec out of sync. This occurs even if I allow the video player program to complete the download before playing the video.

I suspect that it is a problem with the video player, but I confess that I don't know anything about it.

Please advise.

New Videos

Hey Dustin, just rolled into this site today after happening across a reference to it by Jim over in LVS.net and I love the videos. The LVS videos were absolutely amazing and really made getting into ASP.NET very easy for me, and what I have watched with your expression videos have been just as good. After poking around in the forums and looking at the web page, I noticed that a lot of content seems to be over a year old, and one thread I read about you saying to watch for Expression Design videos May 1st or something like that, but May of last year! I was wondering, are you still actively working on videos for this site anymore, specifically in videos to cover the other programs in the Expression Suite? The videos you have on here are outstanding, and really helped me get into CSS and

based layouts really quickly and easily, but I would love to learn how to effectively use MS Expression Design, or hell, even any old design tool.

This has really been my biggest peeve with learning how to do design work. I don't really need to be able to make crazy works of art with illustrator, but I do want to know how to make slick UI and web design assets, such as menu bars, buttons, etc etc. For example, I would love to make my menu bar have that 'glass' look that the Windows Vista start bar has, or the menu bar over at ComponentArt.com has, and I feel like those types of 'effects' or designs shouldn't be that difficult to do, if only I had someone show me how. Another example is the design to the main page of this site, that yellow banner has two cool arcs going through it, and I can draw an arc, but you also have some sort of fading trail, which I have no clue on how to do. Other things like going through Expression Design(Or any design tool) and looking at the different blend modes. I see those all the time in every design app, yet for the life of me cannot figure out what they all do. Like I mentioned above, I feel like any of those skills I could pick up in a 5 min video just going through how to make them, as I could tweak them to my hearts content once I know the process, I don't feel like they are incredibly difficult effects to pull off, though maybe I am completely wrong about that.

I guess I just wish there was a program that would make creating web UI art assets as easy as I feel it should be, though maybe I am just waaaaay oversimplifying things. maybe it does require night classes or an art design degree, but I can't help feel that if I wanted to create a button with rounded edges, but just on the top, give it a dark glass look, etc, etc, that that should be really easy and straightforward to do, and that I am just missing something.

So I guess that was a very long winded way of saying hey, are you still planning on publishing content to this site, and if so, there are some ideas I would love to see ;)

Oh and by the by, if you happen to know any great resources to learn things in the vein of what I was talking about above, I wouldn't complain if you shared ;)

Rollovers with CSS

Firstly thanks for the video, works like a dream! Only one problem I have, I am using a sidebar navigation system from DWT. I only want the css rollovers on certain pages, unfortunately once I attach the css stylesheet to my htm pages, all of the links in my sidebar get altered too. Anyone any idea of a workaround for this? Strangely it is not affecting footer links:blink:

Hi I'm new to this forum and want to say thank you so much for the great tutorials, I've been going through them for a couple of days as Expression is my first attempt at using a code generator. I've created websites in the past using straight HTML and found the generator not worth the learning curve, you flatten that curve. I followed the link provided in the Inserting Flash into Expression Web video and at the top of the page there is a disclaimer saying it is out of date and providing a link to this page http://code.google.com/p/swfobject/ I haven't gotten into that page much, but if anyone can give me advice on which I should use, potential conflicts, etc. I would appreciate it. Footer lost its footing.

Dustin, et al:

My school is using this video as part of the syllabus and I must complete each step as it appears in each video with the same results. In video three the footer cannot be persuaded to stay at the bottom. In both IE7 and Firefox2 it floats in the middle and I cannot find the problem.

Does anybody spot the error? The page is posted at www.gojonnygo.clearwire.net.

Floating a div to the right of a centered div with no float

Hi everyone,
This is an amazing site and have learned so much from all of you in the past week. I'm new to xWeb, but not to web design. I'm a student of Frontpage, but this is the first time I've used divs and I've fallen in love. Dustin, the videos are amazing... I'm sure that's not the first time you've heard that. Thank you.

I'm redesigning my business' website, because frankly it's a mess. While I have several items I'm in the process of figuring out... the one I'd really like to get a handle on is the following:

I've centered a footer content div (footerContent; how original, huh?) to the center of a parent div (footer) using the auto margins for the left and right. Great no problems... but I'd like to insert a div (contentShadow) that will sit to the right of the footerContent div where I will insert an image to give the appearance of a shadow. This seems to be a popular thing to do but I just can't figure it out. I've thought about inserting a div behind the footerContent div and for it to protrude just enough on the right for the shadow image to fall to the right of the footerContent div, but I haven't had any luck with that... I've tried floating the shadow div, but it won't snap to the right edge of the footerContent div because it has no floating settings like what we saw in the floating divs video tutorial. Help?

Installing interactive buttons

Can anyone tell me why, when I am using expression Web to create a new page in my website and create new interactive buttons , that nearly always, when I check all my page of my site, that other button within the site have been changed, or are only showing partly there.? It can take me a couple of hours each time to sort the problem out. Bit of pain really. :w00t:

Hyperlink properties

Great tutorials! Really helped a lot.

I've created my website, but because of the way I've set it up, I've run into the problem of some of the hyperlinks being on a dark background, and others being in the body of text on a white background. I need to know how to have the hyperlink properties only affect one set, and have different properties for the others.

As you can see, the ones at the top I have managed to make white against the dark background, but once you've clicked on them they want to change dark, to the color of the other hyperlinks.
If you look in the main body of the index page, you can see there is a dark hyperlink that takes you to another page, and my problem was if I changed the hyperlink properties to keep the ones in the top white, these would turn white also and disappear.
I'm trying to have separate link properties for each type of link. How would you accomplish that? It's fine to have them change color after use, but right now, they want to either turn dark on a dark background, or conversely, turn white on a white background.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Creating rollovers with CSS code

I created my navigation buttons with CSS code exactly as in the tutorial except that I don't have a separate image for the hover state so I didn't include the code for the background position in ul a:hover. This code is on an attached style sheet on which I also have coding for regular hyperlinks (not in the ul) for link, visited, hover, active (in that order). When I preview in IE6, click on the link & then go back, I am getting the active color for regular hyperlinks. What am I doing wrong?

Once I attach the dwt to a page, I would like to remove the hyperlink from the button for that page (it is in an editable region), but when I remove the hyperlink in the coding (<a=href "url"></a> ) in the <li> (I left the button name in), I lose the button & only have the text. Can I remove the link & still have the button? If so, how?

All of the buttons are on the left side of the page (because the code floats left so they are horizontal?). Is there any way to get them centered but still have them horizontal?

Fixed positioning in a layer

Hello Everyone

This is a great site!

In the tutorial "Understanding Positioning" the only browser used for the fixed position layer demonstration was Foxfire.

I followed the tutorial and tried to preview in Multi Browsers using Foxfire2.0.0.11 and Internet Explorere 6.0.

It worked perfect in Foxfire but did not work at all in Internet explorer. I tried serveral times with the same results.

Can someone tell me if this may be the effect of an IE browser setting or if it just simply does not work in IE_6.0?

Hey! I watched the video on centering your web page and it worked fine when I previewed the browser in Explorer. However, in Firefox my web page was still to the left of the screen. Does anyone know why this may be?

Rollover buttons and centering content

I watched the tutorials on centering my web pages in the browser and creating the rollover buttons. After creating my navigation bar with rollover buttons I cannot get it to center in the browser. It seems as if when I remove the inline styling for the fixed width and height layers that the centering using right-margin and left-margin: auto goes away.

Please help?

Videos will not play

Hello everyone,

I'm in charge of creating a website for a local pizza shop, and i've chosen Microsoft Expression Web to do so. Since I have very little experience in web design, I decided to watch the online tutorials to learn a thing or two, but I cannot get them to work on my pc. I get the error "

The video content presented here requires JavaScript to be enabled and the latest version of the Macromedia Flash Player. If you are you using a browser with JavaScript disabled please enable it now. Otherwise, please update your version of the free Flash Player by downloading here. "

I have downloaded the flash player and checked my security settings to allow Javascript plugins, but it is still not working. Any ideas on how to do this??? There are other computers in the office that this does work on, however I cannot use them as other people have their own jobs to do. Thanks for any help you may be able to provide.

BTW, I am running Windows Vista Business on my machine. I doubt it's Vista, one of the other machines here has the same version and the videos work just fine. Thanks!

Sound problems with the nice video's on this site

How can I import images as thumbnails?

Dustin, Hi, I wonder if you can help me out here. I would like to import some images as thumbnails onto a web page. then I would like to be able to then open up the thumbnails to a full size image. As you know I am new to web design and have completed the basic course with your help. Am I trying to do something to advanced for me at this stage? or is there a very simple procedure? I have been trying everything I can think of for the last couple of weeks and have run out of ideas to try. Thank you in advance for any advice you might be able to give me.

How to import pics to a web page as thumbnails in EW?

Can anyone help, I have created a page in my website to be used as a gallery, The problem I have is that everytime I try to put one or more pics in the page as a thumbnail, they altermatictly open to the full size on the page. Are there any ready made codes that can be copied in? or tutorials out there on importing pictures , videos, etc.

Help, After doing the third lesson "bringing in the content," has anyone else had the same problem as me ? That is when I veiw in the test browser "windows explorer 0.7" the FOOTER still covers my first left column picture. Is there anything I can do to solve this problem?

Hi there!

Here's the scoop!

I am testing EW. I did use in the past Publisher to create videos in my sites so I understand the process but I don't know how to do it with EW,

I have a Windows Media Video .wmv file.

were do I put the file? (were the actual video/audio files are)

were should I Insert the HTML code? (The HTML code that tells were to go on the site and how to play the video materials)

Dustin, can I ask you? How does a partly built page and my email address get on the web on Google. I see it's coming from Expression web site , Both are from corirespondance with you on this forum. If you type in Google " Honda " you will see what I mean. Now is there any way you can remove both pages for me . Thank you. Regards Neil
