A big thank you to Dustin for the video Tutorials. They helped me a great deal when it came to designing and setting up a website for our Martial Arts class. I'm still very much in the dark when it comes to actual coding so I'm still just using the design view of Expression web.

I have the site only hosted on a homepage so the facilities are rather limited as they don't allow cgi scripts etc, still I think I did OK and will be moving the site sometime in the near future to a proper webhost where I can run and add a few more things.

How long does it take for a search engine to pick up a new web site

Does anyone know how long the search engines like Google, Yahoo and the like take to recognise a new web site. I have been on line now 8 days and I still have to type in the Explorer bar the full address of my web site WWW.HONDAH100AOWNERSCLUB.CO.UK

The Renegade Sprint Car Series website is my first attempt at creating an ASP.net site using Expression Web. If you care to take a look, any feedback or critique will be appreciated. We have only had a couple of pre-season races as of this posting, so there isn't a lot of database content to display yet, but results from those two races are available from the Overall Stats/Weekly Results menu.

Thanks Dustin, for providing some really nice tutorials. I look forward to viewing more and participating in your forum.

Hey all,

had a mooch around the site and aiming to spend some quality time with the vidz when I have less paperwork to be doing.

Couple of questions though. I'm a HUGE Exp 1 - 3.3 fan. Loved it to pieces but Mac based so never bothered with Studio. ow bought Parallels so the first thing I did after was grab Studio 2.

So I'm coming from an art perspective - no coding abled :) so these are all media specific.

No fills? No fringes? No effect lines? What de who? First question: are these vitally useful tools in Expr studio 1 and if so can I downgrade?

Examples of imagery that wouldn't be possible are here:

I did have a good play about and came up with this so I am loving parts of Studio 2:

but to miss the fill fringe and effect lines is a huge miss to the tools I naturally use.

Also: in parallels I'm not getting the blend object options working. Is this happening to anyone else? Is there anywhere I can get Studio 1 to test out?

I'm posting this code to see if anybody would have any suggestions for a better way to this. It gets the image and title from a netflix xml file. It works but it seems like I might have done more then I needed to and made it more complicated then it needs to be. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Friends, I want to give a big thank you to everyone who's posted at LearnExpression.com.

Last Spring I asked my childhood hero, Bob Holiday, if I could re-design his web site. The original designer had never done any updates at all, and I had so many ideas.

I was a Computer Science graduate in the 1970's, and I thought I could handle web design. After all, I'd been raised in an era of punch tape, IBM cards and Assembler language! Things had only gotten easier with time.

Yikes -- I quickly realized I had bitten off more than I might be able to chew. I decided on Expression Web for development software, but their so-called "Help" files were incomprehensible. And the included tutorial was just shy of useless.

I was so relieved to find Dustin's web site. The forums have provided me no end of ideas and help. The tutorials made sense and were clear and easy to follow. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Dustin.

I still have clean-up to do -- like the irritating horizontal scroll bar. :w00t: I welcome any and all comments and suggestions. These boards have been a wealth of information and help.

MIX 08 / restyle

Similar to last year when Microsoft had a remix contest for their MIX homepage, they are running a restyle contest for the MIX homepage that starts tomorrow and runs until February 1st.

The goal is to take their files and restyle the homepage with their css files. Last year saw quite a mix of designs and while I completed one, they seemed to have some trouble submitting it, which was unfortunate.

Anyway, if anyone wants to try one and submit it, 3 winners will win a free trip to MIX, that includes the conference, hotel stay, and $1,000 for travel expenses. Not a bad prize at all for doing something that will help you learn quite a bit about CSS and web design. I went to MIX last year and it was fantastic. I'd love to go again this year, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to.

I do plan on submitting something myself, and I hope a couple of you will be interested as well. I'll be glad to help out anyone who needs help and maybe I can come up with a prize for this site for submitting something.

I have been slowly migrating my sites from Front Page to EW. One of the first ones I tried was a [url=http://scottyswebs.com/phptut_iso/members_area/]PHP Login Tutorial[/url]. I used a template from Open Source Web Design and modified it to suit my needs. EW lacks any PHP support so this made the job a bit harder to accomplish. Your EW tutorials were of great help in understanding positioning, especially when I was doing "absolute positioning" on my [url=http://scottyswebs.com/bookbinding101/]Bookbinding Site[/url]. Designing is not one of my strong points so your comments on how these turned out would be appreciated.

This site i used a bit of flash and photoshop. i have used javascript to center the page and resize dependant on screen res.

This next site which i started yesterday i am just looking for some feedback. i have designed a header and i have set it using the css background property but the problem with this is it wont resize for various screen resolutions i would really like to use percentages to resize the site as this would be better than using javascript. the problem is i cant seem to export gifs or png8 files from photoshop with a transparent background and the images loose there clearness does anyone have any advice on how to export gif files? as i cant export png 24 files as some browsers dont support this file.

Now does anyone have any advice as to how can use percentages with my background header? and any general advice!

there are only three pages that work so far they are about us, features and home. also could you tell me how long the page takes to load.

Here are the two sites I am working on right now. First my personal site, www.careysturner.com and then my daughter's site, www.tessajoturner.com . I am loving the asp site.master I am using with my personal site, so I will be transitioning Tessa's site to that format as well. I am looking for design advice. I prefer the center floating column design, which I got working first using E.W. I believe the site is fluid down to 800px width. But I would like to implemement some browser detection. Believe it or not, there are people out there running Windows 3.11 still. Should we work to support them? I remember when I first got a computer, I had a 386 with a harddrive to big to sit in the case. It would occasionally try to hop off my desk. I am also trying to be very Web Standards Compliant. I would like to personally petition the w3c to make some more powerful standards. So far so good, but I know they can do more.

I should also mention, I am currently a truck driver. I am away from home 4 weeks at a time. I love the travel, I hate the public showers and restrooms. I pretty much do all my uploading via my sprint broadband card.

Dustin, I know you are very busy, but have you thought about podcasting?

A newbie's first attempt...

Hi all - And a big thank you to Dustin for his works of encouragement and of course those great tutorials....

I persevered and managed to work my from tutorial to tutorial... overcoming at times unexplainable hiccups. Anyway, its just "live" and has exceeded my expectations for a first attempt.:) www.4sight.eu I think I'm mad/brave enough to accept criticism from anyone prepared to offer any.... so fire away.

Interestingly, it took me longer to write the content and to source or create the images than the actual Expression Web coding etc. A couple of things I was keen to try out was:-

text and layers that coped with varied viewer window/screen size... and heh - it seems to work. That includes the sky with cloud banner I created with a wrap-under right layer section in blue (which one isn't supposed to see the join of....)
navigation options for the viewer i.e. wherever possible more than one way for the viewer to make their way around. For example, I created a 'tour'-like series of windows where one could go from page to page in a kind of sequence, as well as a graphical jigsaw image that I embedded hotspots so people could click and head to wherever they wanted to go directly. (under "marketing services")

My two next tasks will be to have roll-over navigation menus as well as a more punchy home page...... :ermm:

As I start to explore the rollover menus I'll be reading through other content in this forum as well as checking out other tutorials. Wish me luck. BTW, when I looked at this before it seemed to me that EW copes with them easily in .aspx but not in the .htm / .dwt master page combination. Is this right or anyone who can give me some pointers.

Well, I have been working with EW since early February and I am now feeling somewhat comfortable with CSS after using FrontPage and relying on FPSE for a long time. I am now rebuilding all of my sites from the ground up. This first site: http://www.rrlscape.com is for the landscape company I work for where I show computer image landscape designs to potential customers on the site. I ran the CSS report and got everything worked out fine. On the compatibility check there are a few issues since I am using the include webbot to manage my menus. I just couldn’t get the DWT pages to work for me. The other issue is that I use onblur="self.focus() on pages that I need to open in a popup window and stay on top until the visitor closes it. I don’t know if there is any other code that will pass the compatibility check and do the same thing?
The next site is just my personal family website http://www.howiewaldman.com . It starts with a flash intro and then enters the main site. The code is good except for the include webbots.
Two sites down and about six more to go.
It was a challenge to start using CSS and looking more closely at the code after years of not worrying about it. Following this forum and the tutorials were a great tool and I want to thank you very much for the help.
