Subdue Images or Photos on Webpage Background

I would like to place one or rotating images on the background of a webpage. However I want these images to be subdued so that they will not overpower the message text which will be on a layer in front of them. How does one subdue or make images less vivid on a web page. By the way these are photo images of say a store front, the insides of the store, etc.

I want to do the same thing on a what's happening page which list community events. I want to have different photos of places and events in the community. But I again, do not want the background of the photo too overpower the message which is in front of it.

How does one subdue a background image.

ASP.NET webserver problem viewing default.aspx after publishing to webserver

I'm new to ASP.NET but I think I've figured out the basics enough to get a simple website going. I have in fact put together a simple website using ASP.NET via a master page and several content pages. From my development XP based PC I am able to preview my default.aspx from within the EW application by selecting any browser.

Having verified I have a working website on my PC I then publish (FTP) all files to a Comcast webserver. When I attempt to open up the website by specifically opening up the default.aspx file all I see is the actual code not the web graphics I expect. Interestingly, if I open up the mysite.master file it properly displays the master file graphics in a Windows Explorer web browser as I expect. It would appear that the webserver is not properly taking the mysite.master file and combining it with the default.aspx file to serve the graphics that I expect to see.

Can someone give me some clues as to why I am seeing the aspx code instead of my website when opening up the default.aspx file?

Here are some of my guesses but these are just guesses:

1. Maybe Comcast doesn't support ASP.NET or maybe there is something I need to tell the Comcast webserver to do...maybe enable something.

2. The language is set to Page Language="C#" maybe it needs to be "VB#" or something else.

3. Missing files?

Never mind. It would appear that Comcast as well as RoadRunner do not support ASP.NET. That is, for the personal webspace that is allotted to Comcast and RoadRunner ISP account holders. That sux. I didn't want to have to subscribe to a webserver service when I already get this service through my ISP.

Website that extends full width of browser in any resolution

Adding Automatic Dates

Formatting hyperlinks

I have a CSS newbie question about formatting hyperlinks. In the video on this site: "Manually Controlling Your Styles", we learned how to add text styling to individual paragraphs. The example CSS code was:

I am new to using XML files and ASPX pages for me web site.

I have a working XML file and ASPX page that displays the records fine. On another page I want to display one random record from that XML file (the record changes each time the page is refreshed). How can I acomplish this?

copying pictures with ftp

I have problem (with some .jpg-files) when i try to copy them from my local Web site to my remote Web site. I can copy other files succesfylly, but other (certain) files just will not be copied (the copy-picture apperas but nothing happends - it will not disapear) I'm a Expression Web 2- beginner. Does anyone recognize the situation?

Embed PHP scripts into CSS

How to embed a quest book (PHP script) into my own CSS? I cannot seem to figure it out? Php is dowloaded and runs just well. Php script's guest book works just fine. Now how do I get it inside my CSS? Expression web asks to rename the form's extension into .php and when I do it gives me like one million of errors and does not seem to understand php at all... plus it scatters my CSS code all over the place... I know there is a way... Any suggestions anyone? Thanks.

Picture Problem

When I "preview" a web page in various browsers right from EW, the pictures are there. When I go online to the web site, they are not. A couple of them are, however, most just have the "alt" information. Is there something I am missing? I have deleted them and reinserted them, no change.

Struggling after using FP for years! Divs vs. tables - Please Help!

I'm converting a few FrontPage sites to Expression and having a hard time with seemingly random behavior. I've read about the problem with Ctrl-Z and that's driving me crazy!!! I guess I'll have to relearn to NOT use Ctrl-Z. But I digress... I need to add a box (div?) to a page is about 80% of the container's width, has colored background, and contains the following information:

This packet includes (so this is like a little headline for the box)

item 1 (these need to be a bulleted list)

Then a bit more text with a hyperlink.

When I define a style for the div, I can't figure out how to insert the bulleted list inside. In general I'm having a hard time figuring out how to insert various headlines and paragraphs with varying fonts, etc. inside divs. Man, things were SO simple in FrontPage with tables. Can anyone point me to a good video on how to take FrontPage webs and convert them to Expression Web? I am getting more frustrated by the day, trying to figure out this program. Thank you for any help you can provide -- I'm feeling pretty dumb here!

I am having trouble inserting a picture into a layer.

In the Introduction Video 3, he inserts a picture of a snowboarder and because the layer is absolute, the picture doesn't turnout the way he want, so he makes the layer relative, and everything compensates around it. Well, when I turn the layer "picture" into relative, nothing happens, and I cannot figure this out. :( Is there something I am doing wrong? I follow the tutorial step by step.

Also, when I make changes to the layers in Tag Properties, nothing compensates there either. The lines just start crossing each other. :(

Spreadsheets in Expression?

I have another question for you.. sorry ;D I know I have been asking a lot of questions but I don't know anywhere else to turn to for help.

The website I am building for a friend is for a business with a huge inventory of products that he has in a spreadsheet. I created a Products section on the webpage for all of the products to be listed so my question is:

Can I somehow link the spreadsheet with the webpage so that it will actually be viewable on the site? Also, can I manage the inventory in the spreadsheet andhave it update in the website? For example:

Say I have a spreadsheet and my products are Apples & Oranges, we have 5 apples and 5 oranges, and we sell 2 of each. Now it's time to update it on the website, is there a way to edit the amount in the inventory spreadsheet and have it automatically update on the site?

Sorry if that analogy doesn't make it clear, I appreciate any help!

Using dwt templates in Expression Web

I am creating a website using expression web and would like to have a navigation at the top of the site that never changes and one on the left column that changes depending on what page you are on. I am using a template provided with the program. I can not figure out how I would get around it.... Do I need a different master.dwt for each page that I am creating?

Having problem with layers.

Ok, so I've watched the videos on layers here, but am still having problems getting them to work correctly. I know how I can make tables work, but I was wanting to try something new this time. Here's what I'm wanting to do. I'm wanting a layout with a header, a right column, a center body, a left column, and a footer. I finally got the basic layout to work with layers but am now having problems with the sizing. I basically want the left and right columns to stay the same size, but I want the center column, the header, and the footer all to stretch or shrink as the page is resized. Also I have noticed that the way I have the page set up now, if i shrink the page so much the center column pops below the left column and on top of the footer. How can I can I fix this, If I can at all, with Layers. I know with table I could just set the right and left columns width to 150 pixels, the footer and header's to 100% and then the middle column to a certain percent. But as far as I can tell, you can not use percentage as a measurement for a layers width.

Can't get rid of thick blue "border" around pictures that have hotspots

I can't figure out any way to get rid of that blue "border" that appears around any picture if you add a hotspot to a picture. It's constantly there, and really messes up the look of my website.

I did figure out how to change the color of that border that's around all pictures with hotspots in them, but what I need for the color to be gone -- either transparent or zero border.

I'm using Expressions Web 2.0 -- Can anybody help?

I was needing a page that comes up first as a (Adult) 18+ disclaimer.

Should I just make this the index.html page or is there a way to make it appear every time someone comes to the site, no matter which page they were trying to view first.

Say someone had bookmarked a page in the middle of the site and they went to that, how could I get the disclaimer to show before they saw the page they had bookmarked.

Can anyone help with this I've tryed google and haven't found anything similar to help. Thanks :)

Expression Web Hyperlink: Screen Tip

Expression Web gives the opportunity under EDIT HYPERLINK to select a Screen Tip. There is a note: Custom Screen Tips are supported in IE version 4 or later. One should think that IE 7 does show the Screen Tip. Obviously it doesn't in my case but the funny part is, all Screen Tips are shown by Firefox.

Does anybody have an idea, what's wrong here?

DWT & META Tags

Can someone explain to me how META Tags work with DWT. I have the following in my DWT code that I assume was made by EW. <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />

Does this line mean that the search engines search my text and the text itself is the keywords - and also the description? Can I add keywords to this? First time using DWT.

Behavior not working in FF?

tables for data and there borders and alphabetical order?

I was wondering is it possible to create a table for data to go within a div, that can only have the horizontal lines, and the center lines (not the outsides) in grey dash's. Also is it possible to have expression web arrange these in alphabetical order in the same way that Word would do.

The table would have to updated quite frequently.

What are the options?

Make a table in word and copy and paste it over every time?
Can EW arrange in order? I haven't been able to find it?
Or is there another way. I didn't really want to have to arrange the alphabetical order myself.

Any help would be much appricated.

Web Navigation Links

Using EW, is there a relatively easy way to put site navigation links in a multilevel website? Can a site map somehow be used? My website has 5 levels of pages with numerous sibling pages. It was created in FrontPage, which automatically put navigation links in the header & left nav column & I'm really hoping there is some way to include the nav links using EW without having to manually put them in on each page.

Heading Tag - Regular text on same line?

I'm redoing all my web pages in Expression, trying to make proper use of heading tags and the like. My site has bird information and photos, such as the following:

For my little sub-headings in the text...like "habitat"..."Diet"..."Nesting"...etc. I want to use a header tag for the actual title, but want the appearance to be like it is in the page above (constructed with FrontPage). So...I want a header tag on the term "Habitat", for example, but then want regular text right after that, on the same line, as it is in the page above.

Can you have any other text on the same line as a header? I have those headers in that section now distinguished in a .CSS, but can't find a parameter that lets you keep other text on the same line.

Master dwt's

I created a master dwt page with a header that includes the page title & navigation links & a left nav div. The editable "body" has a div nested in it & everything is inside a holder div. When I attached it to a page, I found some problems.

I set the div CSS properties on the div that is nested in the editable "body", but when I attach the master dwt to a page, all of the set properties have a red line through them (meaning they are no longer applicable?) & they changed. There is a left nav div with a set width, relative & floated left, & the div in the editable "body" is set to be relative, float left, has a set width, & the z is 3. When I attach the master dwt to a page, I get margin L & R auto, relative, the width changed to the full width of the holder div, & the z becomes 1; but as stated above, they all have a red line through them.

When the text in the div in the editable "body" is longer than the left nav div, it goes all of the way to the left side once it gets below the left nav div, instead of going straight down. I expect that has something to do with the div CSS properties having the red line through them, but I don't know how to fix it.

Any suggestions on how to make these work would be appreciated. A tutorial on working with master dwt's would be great because Help in EW doesn't explain how to use them (or most everything else, for that matter).

Downloading web site

I am new to Expression Web and have a web site I need to change some things on. I have been given the ftp. file name and did seem like it downloaded into expression web. But I can't seem to figure out how to get the data once in expression web to show as split mode so I can see both the html and the actual web site> I want to be able to open the pages and view them??

Adding Text to images

I'm making a website for a local Historical Society and expect to add lot's of pictures. I can use EW to create the thumbnails for these pictures and it creates a link to open the image in a new window, this works fine and is much simpler then writing a new page for every image, but I would like to include some descriptive text when the image opens full size. Is there a way to automatically open the long description when the image opens or any other way I can do this without creating new pages for each image.

Microsoft Expression Web Trial Version

I downloaded the trial version of Microsoft Expression Web. When I opened it I was stuck at what to do next. The option for me to open a new page is unavaliable and there are several other buttons that are not accessible and are dimmed out indicating that they cannot be used. I am trying to build a master template using layers. It is a fairly simple format:-

Wrapper (set to Relative - 700 wide, auto height)
Header (set to relative - 700 wide, 200 height)
Left column (set to relative - 100 wide, auto height, left float)
Right Column (set to relative - 600 wide, auto height - contains content area)
Footer (set to relative - 700 wide, 200 height)

All seems fine until I put some text into it and display in any browser at which point the text is disected by the footer which is in the middle of the page.

I have spent hours on this and can not resolve, I am not sure why, it must be fairly straightforward.

Browser background control

Creating Rollover with CSS VIDEO - Works in IE NOT in Firefox?

Used the 2 / Creating rollovers with CSS / 9:23 video to do a vertical menue on a side bar. All I did to code was change the original horizontal code to vertical and then instead of a gif image I used background colors. In IE it all works great. In Firefox preview the menu doesn't even show up. Any ideas?

A couple of other questons:

1) Is there a way to put ALL the code for a nav menue in a master css page? Right now part of it is in a master css page (Rollover code)and part of it is in an htm page (text).

2) I preview in IE & Firefox. Should I use any other brower for previews?
