Those areas that remain constant for each page would be in the locked region of the template (non editable). The left menu and content area would be editable regions, changing for page to page and the menus from section to section.

You create the menus that are needed for each section then insert them as needed into the editable left menu.

Example Here http://www.family-genealogy-online.com/

Top menu is constant on each page of the site. Left menu changes from surname section to surname section.

pat

RE: Using dwt templates in Expression Web

I am just now beginning to learn E.W. but am thinking along this line with kimica's question:

1. Site has multiple sections, example: Prod 1, Prod 2, Prod 3, Prod 4, Prod 5.

2. Top navigation is global.

3. Side navigation should reflect links within each section / product category.

I'm guessing a good idea would be to create a .dwt page for each category. Create one and save it as many times as needed, each named accordingly. Example: prod1.dwt, prod2.dwt, prod3.dwt, etc. Then each side navigation bar can, in one sweep, handle all pages that .dwt is being attached to.

     PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE

Someone or more tell kimica and me if my idea is workable. Is it the best way to go? ...Or...

Would you create a vertical panel / layer down the left side and then create a nested layer inside of that one. Name the nested layer, "Prod1," and use it for all pages in that category. Do the same for the each category. The nested layer would then contain all the links and additional links for the associated category.

Thanks a million for your response(s).

Certo

RE: Using dwt templates in Expression Web

Not sure if you found your solution or not but here's my take on it.

Create your header with the main navigation on your DWT page. If the left column navigation is going to be on all pages but with different links only create the column itself on the DWT and leave it as editable. As you create pages from the DWT you add the links for that page to the left column. I don't have an example to post for you to look at.

RE: Using dwt templates in Expression Web

He indicated the left navigation would change from section to section which is why I pointed him to where I did:)

I am creating a website using expression web and would like to have a navigation at the top of the site that never changes and one on the left column that changes depending on what page you are on.

To add, the top menu would NOT have to be an editable region if it will remain the same throughout the site.

pat

RE: Using dwt templates in Expression Web

Is the navigation on the left ever repeated? I have had a look at your page, but still can't figure out how to do it.

I spent all day yesterday playing around with it. I managed to write the code for navigation on each page but eacg time I went back to it, it had disappeared. Also, when it had saved and I clicked the link, the page didn't come up. I tried to make a hyperlink by highlighting the chosen word in the code and choosing the hyperlink icon, but it just placed the reference on the top of the page.

I hope that someone will be able to help me!
Kindest regards
:D
RE: Using dwt templates in Expression Web

I create the dwt and have the left side navigation as an editable region.
