| Friends, I want to give a big thank you to everyone who's posted at LearnExpression.com. Last Spring I asked my childhood hero, Bob Holiday, if I could re-design his web site. The original designer had never done any updates at all, and I had so many ideas. I was a Computer Science graduate in the 1970's, and I thought I could handle web design. After all, I'd been raised in an era of punch tape, IBM cards and Assembler language! Things had only gotten easier with time. Yikes -- I quickly realized I had bitten off more than I might be able to chew. I decided on Expression Web for development software, but their so-called "Help" files were incomprehensible. And the included tutorial was just shy of useless. I was so relieved to find Dustin's web site. The forums have provided me no end of ideas and help. The tutorials made sense and were clear and easy to follow. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Dustin. I still have clean-up to do -- like the irritating horizontal scroll bar. Thanks for sharing guitarmom! That's really great that you were able to do a site for someone you really care about like that! I'm glad to have been able to help you along! 
I'll try to look at it in a bit more detail as soon as I can. I have to get to bed tonight!

The easiest way I have found to avoid the dreaded horizontal scroll bar is to use % when specifying the width of most elements -
main container width 100% or 90%
masthead
top menu
left nav - usually between 160-200px - float left
main content - left margin 180-220px with no width specified
footer
I also avoid using absolute positioning of elements
